What Changed in Pickleball in September 2025

September 2025 turned out to be one of those months where several different versions of pickleball were changing at the same time. The pro game tightened its equipment rules, the PPA reshaped its season around MLP, Major League Pickleball reported another jump in business metrics, cities kept searching for more courts while also fighting over noise, and the PPA temporarily handed its pros wooden paddles to show just how much modern equipment had changed the game.

JOOLA Gen3 Settlement Claim Site Goes Live

• The court-approved JOOLA Gen3 settlement website was live by September 30. At that stage, the proposed settlement provided a $300 refund for an eligible paddle returned with proof of purchase from an authorized retailer, or a $150 JOOLA.com gift code without that proof. Sacramento Numbers Show What Wood Paddles Changed

• PPA’s post-event stats made the wooden-paddle experiment more useful than a novelty. In the mixed final, 22% of third shots were drives; in the men’s final it was 8%, and in the women’s final 4%. The men’s doubles final also produced a 63-shot rally. Panas Malaysia Cup Brings U.S. Stars Into PPA Asia

• Anna Bright and Ben Johns won mixed doubles at the Panas Malaysia Cup, beating Kaitlyn Christian and Christian Alshon 11-2, 11-3. Johns and Alshon then lost the men’s doubles final to Tyson McGuffin and Eric Oncins in an 11-5, 13-15, 11-9 three-game match. Martinez Cuts Hidden Valley Pickleball to Three Days a Week

• Martinez, California put unusually restrictive hours into effect at Hidden Valley Sports Courts after months of complaints about noise, parking, and rule violations: Tuesday 4–8 p.m., Wednesday 8 a.m.–8 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m.–1 p.m., closed the rest of the week. San Francisco Identifies Space for 44 Possible New Courts

• A San Francisco planning process identified nine possible sites that could accommodate 44 new pickleball courts. Kawamoto Reverse Sweep Was Rarer Than It Looked

• PPA’s follow-up analysis put Jackie and Jade Kawamoto’s Cincinnati women’s doubles comeback in context. They lost the first two games to Tyra Black and Jorja Johnson and won the next three. Coach Sid Note: Giving Ground Can Be the Right Counter

• One Cincinnati pattern I would steal is the Kawamotos giving up a little NVZ space during speedup exchanges to buy reaction time, soften the next ball, and then re-engage. “Have fast hands” is not much of a coaching cue. Honolulu J2FC+ Launches

• Honolulu Pickleball Co. launched the SWORD & SHIELD J2FC+ on September 15. The hybrid-plus shape was part of the broader 2025 paddle trend toward giving players more power without forcing them all the way into a traditional elongated shape.

PPA Moves Its Season Finish to May

What September 2025 Actually Changed

Looking back, the month was less about any single tournament than about the sport becoming more structured and more complicated. Professional equipment rules now had a UPA-A track running alongside USA Pickleball approval. The PPA and MLP calendars started behaving more like separate seasons. MLP’s own numbers showed commercial growth. Court construction and court noise became the same municipal planning problem. And Sacramento accidentally ran one of the better equipment experiments the pro game could have designed: hand every pro a wooden paddle and see which parts of modern strategy disappear.
