How Coach AJ and I Tested the Brioti FOCOS

Our experience with the FOCOS began in 2024 and continued through regular indoor and outdoor use. We wore them during games, drilling, lessons and fast kitchen exchanges rather than evaluating them only through an unboxing or brief practice session.

We paid closest attention to the issues that determine whether protective eyewear stays on a player’s face or ends up forgotten in a bag:

• Frame movement during lateral motion and quick transitions.
• Comfort during longer playing sessions.
• Peripheral obstruction and blind spots.
• Fogging in hot and humid conditions.
• Hat and visor compatibility.
• Lens-changing difficulty.
• Whether the OGMENT lenses helped the ball separate from visually busy backgrounds.

What Are Brioti FOCOS Pickleball Glasses?

The FOCOS are Brioti’s pickleball-specific performance and protective eyewear system. Rather than adapting an ordinary pair of sunglasses and calling them court glasses, Brioti designed the frame shape, grip, ventilation and lens system around fast movement and rapid ball tracking.

The lightweight STREX nylon frame accepts interchangeable lenses for different types of light. The frame remains the same while the selected lens adapts the eyewear for outdoor sun, mixed conditions, indoor facilities or lower-light play.

Selected lenses also use Brioti’s OGMENT color-enhancing technology, which is intended to help bright yellow and green pickleballs stand apart from courts, fences, trees, walls and other background distractions.

Why Brioti Developed the FOCOS

Brioti founder Tanner Richie has explained that the FOCOS development process began by speaking with advanced players, coaches and people who did not wear protective eyewear.

That last group matters. Many players understand that eye protection is sensible and still leave their glasses in the bag. If eyewear fogs, slides down the nose, pinches after an hour, blocks peripheral vision or looks like industrial safety equipment, good intentions often lose.

According to Tanner, developing the FOCOS involved working with eyewear manufacturers in multiple countries, evaluating repeated samples and refining lens tints through player feedback and on-court testing. Brioti also supplied pickleballs to its lens manufacturer so their colors could be analyzed while the OGMENT tints were being developed.

After wearing the FOCOS, it is clear that Brioti considered several small court problems that generic sports glasses often overlook. The brim clearance, temple grip, ventilation and broad lens shape all contribute to the experience.

Brioti FOCOS Design and Build Quality

From the moment I put on the Brioti FOCOS, the frame felt lightweight without feeling flimsy. The nylon has enough flexibility to remain comfortable while still feeling substantial enough for repeated court use.

AJ and I noticed the grip immediately. We moved laterally, bent for low balls, scrambled through transitions and changed direction without the frame bouncing or gradually migrating down the nose.

The nose pads and temple tips provide security without pulling hair or digging uncomfortably into the sides of the head. Too loose, and a player spends every rally pushing the glasses back into place. Too tight, and by game three the pressure becomes the only thing you can think about. The FOCOS landed in the comfortable middle for us.

The wraparound shape also provides useful coverage around the eyes without creating the heavy, enclosed feeling associated with some protective eyewear.

What Continued Use Tells Us About the Frame

The FOCOS remained in our playing rotation well beyond the original testing period. That matters more than a frame merely feeling sturdy during an unboxing. We kept reaching for them because the fit, field of view and secure positioning continued to be useful on actual courts.

Like any sports eyewear, cosmetic wear will depend on how carefully the lenses are cleaned and stored. The included protective case is therefore useful equipment rather than optional decoration, especially for players who own additional lenses.

Do the FOCOS Fit Under a Pickleball Hat?

Brioti’s angled upper-frame design is a thoughtful detail for players who wear hats or visors. AJ and I almost always wear hats on the court, and the FOCOS fit beneath a curved brim more naturally than many bulky sports glasses.

The temples and upper edge do not create excessive interference with the hat, helping the glasses remain comfortable and stable during outdoor play.

FOCOS Fit and Comfort

The FOCOS use a medium-fit frame. They fit both of us well and should suit many players with small-to-average and medium face sizes. A genuinely wide head may have a different experience, and players who normally require extra-large glasses may find the frame too snug.

The glasses are light enough that they did not create noticeable pressure during longer playing sessions. Once a game began, the frame largely faded from our awareness.

That may be the best compliment I can give them: once the point starts, I tend to forget they are on my face.

No single frame will fit every player perfectly, so anyone with an especially wide head or extra-large eyewear needs should take the medium sizing into account before ordering.

Brioti FOCOS On-Court Performance

On the court, the Brioti FOCOS provide a clear and relatively unobstructed view. The frame does not create the obvious peripheral blind spots we have experienced with some other pickleball glasses.

At the kitchen line, the ball can move from an opponent’s paddle toward your body or face before your brain has finished processing the exchange. A thick frame edge is not welcome there.

The wraparound shape covers the area around the eyes while keeping the most important portions of the view open. During quick hands battles, resets and defensive scrambles, we did not feel boxed in by the frame.

The glasses also remained stable. They did not bounce noticeably during normal movement, and we did not need to repeatedly adjust them between points.

How the FOCOS Compare With Other Pickleball Glasses We Have Tested

Do the OGMENT Lenses Make the Pickleball Stand Out?

The OGMENT lenses are designed to improve the visual separation between bright yellow or green pickleballs and the surrounding background.

During our testing, the color-enhancing lenses made the ball easier to distinguish against fencing, trees, walls and other visual clutter. The court did not suddenly look unnatural or exaggerated. The ball simply separated more clearly from the background.

That is a relatively subtle visual change, but it becomes useful when exchanges speed up and the area behind the ball is busy.

Individual preference still matters. Some players enjoy stronger contrast enhancement, while others prefer a completely neutral view indoors.

Why Are the FOCOS Lenses Non-Polarized?

The FOCOS lenses are intentionally non-polarized. That does not mean Brioti omitted an expected premium feature.

Polarized sunglasses can be useful for reducing reflected glare during activities such as driving, boating or fishing. On a pickleball court, players rely heavily on natural depth cues, contrast and rapid visual tracking.

Brioti’s approach is to enhance ball visibility through lens tint and color management without adding polarization that could alter the appearance of certain surfaces, screens or reflections.

In practice, the court still looks like the court. The selected tint influences how strongly the ball separates from the background without producing the visual effects some players associate with polarized lenses.

Brioti FOCOS Lens Options

The interchangeable lens system allows players to configure the FOCOS for different types of court lighting.

• OGMENT 4D Shade: A darker outdoor lens intended for bright sunlight.

Changing the FOCOS Lenses

Changing lenses takes some practice. The first swap felt more aggressive than expected because the frame must flex and the lens must be seated correctly.

New owners should watch Brioti’s FOCOS QuickStart instructional video before attempting the first lens change.

Once we understood where the frame was designed to flex and how the lens caught the groove, the process became much easier.

We still prefer changing lenses before leaving home. Trying to perform delicate eyewear surgery between games with sweaty hands is not my idea of efficient court management.

The lens system is not magnetic. The lens fits securely into the frame and must be removed and installed using the correct technique.

FOCOS Anti-Fog Performance in Louisiana Humidity

Louisiana is a demanding place to test anti-fog claims. Moving from an air-conditioned building into summer heat and heavy humidity can cause ordinary glasses to cloud almost immediately.

During our use, the Brioti FOCOS handled those conditions well. The glasses remained clear during active play and did not develop the persistent fogging we have experienced with more enclosed eyewear.

Brioti combines its VAPORID anti-fog lens treatment with XPAND ventilation. The upper portion of the frame can be adjusted to increase airflow when additional ventilation is needed.

No eyewear is completely immune to every combination of sweat, temperature, humidity and individual fit. Skin oil, residue and dirty lenses can also reduce anti-fog performance.

Even with those qualifications, fogging has been the exception rather than the running theme during our time with the FOCOS.

What Does the Z87+ Rating Mean?

Brioti lists the FOCOS protective frame-and-lens system as carrying an ANSI Z87+ impact rating.

The plus sign is meaningful. Z87+ includes high-mass and high-velocity impact testing of the complete frame-and-lens system rather than relying only on the basic impact resistance associated with ordinary sunglasses.

This does not mean the glasses are indestructible, nor does it guarantee prevention of every possible eye or facial injury. No protective eyewear should create a false sense of invulnerability.

The rating does provide a more meaningful and specific level of impact testing than eyewear marketed only with vague “impact-resistant” language.

At the kitchen line, players can be only a short distance apart while exchanging fast shots. Balls can also deflect unexpectedly from paddles, hands or the net. Appropriately rated protective eyewear is a sensible way to reduce avoidable risk.

Brioti FOCOS Packaging and Accessories

Brioti provides one of the stronger unboxing experiences we have encountered in pickleball eyewear.

The glasses arrive in a heavy-duty presentation box with a secure magnetic closure. It is a nicer box than glasses strictly require, but it makes the purchase feel more substantial than an anonymous frame sliding around inside a plastic sleeve.

The included protective case earns its space inside a pickleball bag, especially once a player owns more than one lens. It keeps the frame and extra lenses organized instead of allowing them to move loose through the bottom of the bag.

Are Brioti FOCOS Pickleball Glasses Worth It?

We believe the Brioti FOCOS are worth considering for frequent players who want more than a basic barrier between the pickleball and their eyes.

Less expensive safety glasses can provide basic coverage. The FOCOS justify their premium position through the combination of optical clarity, secure fit, broad peripheral vision, interchangeable lenses, adjustable ventilation, impact-rated construction and useful accessories.

The glasses are particularly well suited to players who compete regularly, move between indoor and outdoor courts or struggle with inexpensive eyewear that fogs, shifts or interferes with their view.

Casual players who only want the least expensive form of basic coverage may not need the complete FOCOS system. Players who appreciate premium sports eyewear and expect to wear it frequently are more likely to recognize its value.
