Engage Alpha Paddle Review – Putting the Pursuit Alpha to the Test
I love testing pickleball paddles. It’s a passion of mine. So when Engage released five new paddles, including the Alpha, Alpha Pro, and Profoam, I knew I had to try them all. This article focuses on the Engage Alpha 14mm and 16mm, which share the same core. While I’ll be reviewing the others soon, the Alpha 16mm already stands out as one of my top two favorites from the new lineup.
Quick take: Engage Alpha is Engage’s control-focused Gen 4 thermoformed paddle that still packs a punch – perfect for intermediate and advanced players who live at the kitchen line. The paddle is a Gen 4 thermoformed design with a polymer core that uses foam in specific areas to enhance its features.
Yes, Engage Alpha is worth it if you want a spin-first paddle that stays plush but brings pop when you attack.
PickleTip Pro Insight
After two solid weeks of play with both thicknesses, I can say this is the best paddle Engage has produced. The paddle face is “CRAZY gritty,” which translates into heavy spin and confident resets. The 14mm version feels more like a 16mm control paddle but still gives you explosive counters when needed. Engage’s unibody design and foam perimeter make the paddle stable and nearly vibration-free.

Quick Verdict – Should you buy the Alpha?
Who it suits: Spin junkies, control players, and anyone who wants plush feel without giving up finishing power.
Verdict: The Alpha is a home run – gritty, stable, and forgiving with power on tap.
This paddle feels plush, almost muted, yet ready to fire when you step on a drive.
Thickness Tip: If you crave maximum control and forgiveness, go 16mm. If you want extra punch for counters, grab the 14mm. Both are light enough to customize later with lead tape if you want to tweak swing weight.

Specifications & Tech
The Engage Alpha is built with tour-level materials and Gen4 engineering:
- Raw Toray T700 Carbon Fiber Face: Next Gen inner layer for durability and consistent grit – engineered to last up to 4x longer than standard carbon paddles.
- TrueStrike Polypropylene Core: Delivers a plush, consistent feel with improved durability and balanced pop.
- UNIBODY Thermoformed Design: One-piece build that resists core crush and keeps the face stable through impact.
- Impact Edge Foam Barrier: Adds perimeter weighting, kills vibration, and enlarges the sweet spot.
- Response+ Foam Channel: Boosts energy return for faster drives and counters.
- Fusion Control Layer: A precision-tuned secondary layer that improves dwell time for controlled drops and resets.
- Colorway: Black | Blue with gradient edge guard for a premium look.
- USAP Approved: Legal for all tournament play.

Performance & Feel
Engage Alpha leans slightly toward control but still has enough punch for finishing drives. Drops and resets are confidence-inspiring, and the spin potential is elite – topspin serves kick like a mule. The paddle rewards an aggressive player who also needs touch around the kitchen. It turns defensive digs into offensive drives faster than most control paddles, letting you flip momentum mid-rally.
The 16mm Alpha is the control king here – super consistent on resets and dinks, with laser-like accuracy on roll volleys. The 14mm Alpha plays almost identically but adds just a touch more pop off the face, which some players will prefer for quick counterattacks. Personally, I found myself reaching for the 16mm more often because it let me paint lines without fear of sailing balls long.
Sweet Spot & Mishits: Due to the core and surrounding areas of foam, these paddles have large sweet spots and I didn’t experience many mishits. Off-center contact toward the throat loses just a little pop, but anything above the midline still clears the net with confidence.
Spin Potential: No published RPM data is available yet, but spin feels top-tier – I was getting heavy topspin serves that kicked shoulder-high, easily comparable to CRBN 1X and other top-spin paddles on the market.
Swing & Twist Weight: There are currently no public lab-measured numbers for the Alpha 14mm or 16mm. Subjectively, the 14mm feels quicker and easier to whip on roll volleys, while the 16mm carries a touch more stability and plow-through. Both leave plenty of room for adding weight without making them sluggish.
Customization: Both of these paddles are very light and leave plenty of room for customization. I played with both in stock form and plan on adding weight later to see the difference.
Engage Alpha Design & Build
The Engage Alpha marks a significant and welcome shift in the brand’s visual identity. For a long time, the signature sniper reticle design on the paddle face felt busy and, for some, aesthetically unappealing. With the Alpha, Engage has transitioned to a more modern, minimalistic, and clean design. The new look is not only easy to identify from a distance but also feels more premium and appealing. The gradient edge guards look sharp and the grip feels tennis-inspired, reducing fatigue. The gritty face still feels new after 15+ hours of play, and the paddle shows no sign of delamination or core degradation.
Durability: Since these are foam paddles we don’t need to worry about core crushing or delaminating – a major plus over some Gen 3 thermoformed models that developed these issues.
How Engage Alpha Compares to Joola Perseus and Pursuit Pro1
Alpha gives you Perseus-like offensive potential but with more forgiveness and less risk of core crushing. While the Perseus delivers a more explosive, direct rebound, Alpha’s slightly muted response gives players just a fraction more dwell time, which translates into softer drops and more precise resets under pressure. Compared to the Engage Pursuit Pro1, Alpha’s spin advantage is obvious and the sweet spot feels bigger, giving it the nod for competitive all-court play.
Where to Buy
The Engage Alpha retails for $199.99 USD and is available directly from EngagePickleball. Use the Engage the link above to have the discount code automatically added at checkout and get a huge discount – making it the best value if you’re upgrading your setup.

Value Perspective: If you are an Engage fan, and love the brand or want to support U.S.-based manufacturing, the Alpha is a value buy for what you get compared to previous Engage paddles like the Pro 1 line. Plays much better for less.
Alpha Pros and Cons
Pros
- Exceptional spin and control
- Massive, forgiving sweet spot
- Plush feel with hidden power
- Durable, long-lasting grit
- Comfortable grip for long sessions
Cons
- Slight learning curve on first few sessions
- Not a pure power paddle for big hitters
Player Feedback
“This paddle is plush but lets me flick a passing shot past anyone. After 10+ hours of play, grit is still intact.”
“The 14mm felt surprisingly controlled – more like a 16mm but with extra pop for counters.”
My Take: After back-to-back sessions with all five of Engage’s new paddles, Alpha 16mm is my #2 overall pick – ahead of the Profoam and Alpha Pro 14mm, and just behind the Alpha Pro 16mm. That’s a huge vote of confidence for a paddle that blends control and spin this well.
Who Should Pick It Up
Intermediate to advanced players who mix touch with aggressive topspin drives will benefit the most. It’s perfect for players looking to control the kitchen and then attack openings with confidence.
Both of these paddles can be used by anyone 2.5+ without a problem, since they are control-oriented and not overly powerful. They will grow with your game as you improve.
If you play a high-spin, all-court game, Alpha unlocks the ability to reset, shape, and attack without compromise.

Alpha Pickleball Paddle Update
As of September 17, 2025: After 15+ hours of play, the face grit remains strong, with only a slight “softening” of feel – likely just me adapting. No delamination or core issues. Check back here – I’ll update again after 30+ hours to report on grit durability and edge performance. I am also monitoring for when independent labs or reviewers release swing weight, twist weight, or spin RPM data so I can add those numbers here for a full data-backed review.
