Creating a DUPR Club for Pickleball in New Orleans

My Journey to Improving the local Pickleball Community

Pickleball has become my passion. Every time I step onto the court, I feel the excitement and adrenaline of the game. However, as I continue to play, I realize that there are inconsistencies in the rating system that leave me questioning my true skill level.

As I mentioned in my previous journal entry, the world of pickleball ratings can sometimes feel like the Wild West. Self-ratings are common, and some players are being forced to play in lower-level brackets despite their drastic improvement. It can be frustrating and confusing, especially for new players who are just starting to learn the game.

Experiencing DUPR Day

My son AJ and I recently decided to attend the DUPR Day event at Pelican Park in Mandeville. We wanted to learn more about the rating system and see if there was a better way to rate players accurately. Despite the bad weather before the event, we were impressed with how well it was run. The event organizer, Bud, did a fantastic job of adapting to time constraints and late arrivals while making sure everyone had a great time.

DUPR, which stands for “Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating,” is a rating system that uses advanced algorithms to provide accurate ratings for players. It takes into account not only wins and losses but also the quality of the opponent and the score differential. After attending the DUPR Day event, I realized that this could be the solution to the inconsistent ratings in the New Orleans area.

Improving the local Pickleball Community

On the drive home, AJ and I discussed the possibility of creating a DUPR Club for pickleball in the New Orleans area. After a bit of research, I found that it wouldn’t be too difficult to do so. I sent a request to DUPR to add a New Orleans Pickleball Club to their system, with a request to organize tournaments and rec play that we could submit to DUPR. I was thrilled to receive a prompt response from a DUPR representative and have scheduled a meeting with her for tomorrow afternoon.

The New Orleans Pickleball Club will soon be available for local players to join on DUPR. Once the club is approved, players can join the club on the MyDUPR site and participate in the events that we organize in the area. This will give many players from the New Orleans area a better idea of their rating and hopefully create a more accurate rating system.

AJ and I are excited to organize weekly games and tournaments once the club gets approved. It will be a great opportunity to bring the pickleball community in New Orleans together and improve our skills together. My Journey to Improved Pickleball Skills

Before I end this entry, let me share a bit of my personal journey in the world of pickleball. I’ve been playing this sport for a little over a month now, and I must say that it has been an exhilarating experience for me.

However, there was a point in my journey when I hit a major bump. It happened a few weeks ago when I sustained an injury during a game. I had to take a break from playing for a few days to allow my body to heal.

During that period, I found myself reflecting on my game and my overall skill level. I realized that despite my dedication and regular practice, I was still unsure about my rating. I wasn’t the only one, as many players feel this way.

With the establishment of the New Orleans Pickleball Club on DUPR, I believe that we can create a community of players who are passionate about the sport and eager to improve. Together, we can create a more structured and organized system of play that is both fun and competitive.
