Private Pickleball Lessons

Are Private Pickleball Lessons worth it?

Is it Worth Taking Private Lessons in Pickleball?

I’ve been coaching pickleball for about a year now, primarily working with beginners. This experience has led me to question my own proficiency as a player and what I can offer as an instructor of Private Pickleball Lessons. Let’s take a look at the benefits of lessons.

The Role of a Pickleball Coach

As a coach, my strength lies in my attitude. I am fun to play with and against. You may be better than me, but I guarantee that I will make you earn that win. Being a good coach doesn’t necessarily mean being a great player. It’s about having a good eye for mechanics, technique, and strategy, and being able to effectively convey instructions to the student.

Why Take Private Pickleball Lessons?

You might wonder why anyone needs lessons for a game that involves simply hitting a whiffle ball with a paddle. However, an outside set of eyes can correct an issue in seconds that might take months or never be addressed by just playing, leading to ingrained bad habits.

What are Private Pickleball Lessons Worth?

The value of a lesson depends on what you’re willing to spend and what you hope to gain. I’m grateful we have people teaching others the rules and the basics. As fast as the game is growing, we need all the help we can get.

Should I Teach Myself Pickleball or Get Lessons?

Coaching can be extremely helpful, especially if you have a good coach in your area. Private lessons are particularly beneficial as they can focus on your specific skill set and game, helping you improve faster.

Benefits for Beginners and Novices

If you’re a complete beginner, lessons can prevent you from developing bad habits. If you’re a novice, lessons can help correct any bad habits you’ve already developed. My teaching philosophy is to start beginners at the very beginning, teaching the basics first and then gradually adding skills as they are needed in a game situation.

Benefits of Private Pickleball Lessons

Private lessons are good for learning the basic rules, scoring, and court positioning. They also help you learn proper foundational body mechanics, techniques, game strategies, and partner movements. One-on-one private training offers individual attention to help you improve your weak areas and reach your goals.

Additional Pros and Cons of Taking Private Pickleball Lessons

Pros:

  • Structured Learning: Private lessons provide a structured learning environment, which can be beneficial for those who prefer a systematic approach to learning new skills.
  • Personalized Feedback: In a private lesson, the coach can provide personalized feedback based on your specific strengths and weaknesses. This can lead to more efficient improvement compared to group lessons or self-learning.
  • Focus on Strategy: Private lessons often provide more opportunity to focus on strategy and game play, rather than just technique. This can be particularly beneficial for intermediate to advanced players.
  • Confidence Building: For beginners, private lessons can help build confidence before joining group play. The one-on-one attention can help new players feel more comfortable and prepared.

Cons:

  • Cost: Private lessons can be more expensive than group lessons or self-learning. The cost can be prohibitive for some people.
  • Availability: Depending on where you live, it might be difficult to find a qualified pickleball coach for private lessons.
  • Less Social Interaction: One of the benefits of pickleball is the social aspect of the game. Private Pickleball Lessons don’t offer the same level of social interaction as group lessons or open play.
  • Over-reliance on Coaching: There’s a risk of becoming overly reliant on coaching and not being able to make decisions or adjustments on your own during a game.
