A New Pickleball Paddle and Exciting Progress
My Fifth Day of Pickleball: A New Paddle and Exciting Progress
Wednesday 3/15/23 marked my fifth day of playing pickleball, and I could hardly contain my excitement when my new paddle arrived. I didn’t expect it to arrive so quickly, but I was eager to try it out and see how it compared to the one I had been using.
Unboxing the Joola Ben Johns Hyperion Pickleball Paddle
When I opened the package, I was genuinely surprised by how light the Joola Ben Johns Hyperion Pickleball Paddle felt in my hands. The handle was a few inches longer than my previous paddle, and the rough surface seemed perfect for putting some spin on the ball. While I would love to provide a detailed review of this paddle, I feel I need more experience to truly understand the differences between various paddles. Nevertheless, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to play with a seemingly superior paddle.
Experiencing the New Paddle on the Court
Meeting up with AJ at Pontiff, I proudly showed off my new paddle. He, too, was excited about its quick arrival and unique dimensions. Even a few of our friends seemed impressed by it. As we stepped on the court to play doubles, we took some time to warm up and get a feel for my new paddle.
During warm-up, I quickly noticed the significant difference between this paddle and the one I had been using. It seemed to glide through the air effortlessly, and the ball appeared to jump off the paddle with ease. Once warmed up, AJ and I began playing against a pair of our pickleball friends.
At first, I found myself hitting the ball at the edge of the paddle more often than I would have liked. Perhaps it was due to the excitement or the lighter weight of the paddle. However, after a few hits, my timing improved. As I served, I remembered to stay back and let the ball bounce on the return. I was delighted to see the ball curve over the net with a topspin, courtesy of the paddle’s gritty surface.
A Better Performance with the New Paddle
We played three games today, and AJ and I won two of them. I felt significantly more confident and comfortable playing with the new paddle. While it may still need some breaking in, it already seems to be a vast improvement over my previous one. I can’t stress enough the impact that a good paddle can have on your effectiveness on the pickleball court. If you can afford a better paddle, I highly recommend investing in one.
Despite my new paddle, I still made my fair share of mistakes on the court. My backhand remains a work in progress, and I sometimes get overly aggressive when I see a soft lob that I think I can slam. On occasion, I manage to hit those shots just right, but other times, they either go long or straight into the net.
On the bright side, I finally learned how the scoring works and what the numbers represent. I also remembered to call out the score each time I served. With each passing day, I find myself enjoying this sport more and more.
A Growing Love for Pickleball
Looking back on my fifth day of pickleball, I’m thrilled with the progress I’ve made and the excitement that comes with trying out a new paddle. I can only imagine the improvements I’ll experience as I continue to play and grow more accustomed to my Ben Johns Pickleball Paddle. My love for the sport has blossomed, and I can’t wait to see what new challenges and triumphs tomorrow will bring.
