The 2024 Joola Pickleball Celebration from August 30 to September 1, 2024, at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, was an event to remember. We didn’t come to play in the kiddie division. Instead, we entered a three-day tournament that was packed with intense pickleball matches and fierce competition, where only the best of the best clashed on the courts. After enduring a grueling 10-hour drive from New Orleans, our team, Underage Dinking, finally arrived, fully prepared and eager to take on some of the top adult teams. The camaraderie, the new friendships, and the reconnections with old ones were fantastic, but make no mistake—we came here with a mission to compete and win.

Team Underage Dinking: A Unique Mix of Youth and Experience

Our team was definitely different from the rest. We had a blend of ages and styles: Austin Romaguera (14 years old), Luke Geiser (15 years old), Fletcher Carstens (17 years old), myself at 21, and our seasoned teammate, Tim Rice (66 years old). It was a combination that raised a few eyebrows, but we knew what we were capable of. With our mix of youthful energy and experienced strategy, we were ready to compete. We were a young team going up against adult teams, but we were determined to make a statement.

Overcoming Challenges at the 2024 Joola Pickleball Celebration

The venue at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center was truly amazing, and the atmosphere was electric. Since the stakes were high, every match presented a new challenge. Facing off against older, more experienced players wasn’t easy. Time and again, we found ourselves in tough spots, facing deficits that seemed impossible to overcome. However, with each point, our belief grew stronger. We kept pushing forward, stayed focused, and refused to give up. As a result, the court became our proving ground, and each game turned into an opportunity to show what we were made of.

Our team displayed incredible resilience and determination. Some of our comebacks were the stuff of legend. Whether it was a clutch shot by @fletch_carstens, a quick reflex volley by @austin_romaguera_pb, or a smart play by @timrice2448, everyone had their moment. We had no quit in us. It was all about heart, strategy, and trusting each other. We knew that if we played together and kept our heads in the game, we could overcome any challenge.

Against all odds, we did it. Team Underage Dinking took home the gold medals, new Joola Mod TA-15 paddles, and a championship belt. Winning felt surreal, but it was a testament to our hard work and teamwork. To think that a team made up mostly of teenagers, alongside our 66-year-old teammate, could stand victorious against adult teams was incredible. Our unique combination of styles and ages became our strength. We played for each other, and that unity made all the difference.

The memories from this tournament will undoubtedly stay with us forever. Playing alongside Austin, Luke, Fletcher, and Tim was not only an absolute honor but also a truly rewarding experience. Each of them brought something special to the team, and together, we created something amazing. Consequently, I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to compete alongside such talented players.
