2023 Drew Brees NOLA Picklefest Pickleball Tournament Winners

I would like to congratulate all of the participants that medaled in the 2023 Drew Brees NOLA Picklefest Pickleball Tournament.

Participation in this inaugural pickleball tournament was impressive. Although pickleball has grown so much across the country and the world, the New Orleans area seemed to be a bit behind the growth curve. There are not many professional events or big name tournaments in the area. But August proved to be a great month for the explosion of pickleball to show the true potential of the future growth of pickleball in the region. Thousands of pickleball players from the New Orleans area and across the United States brought their A game to the two tournaments (The Big Easy Pickleball Tournament, and The NOLA Picklefest). With these 2 tournaments and the grand opening of the Exchange indoor pickleball facility in New Orleans, the future of Pickleball looks bright in the area.

Hopefully soon, we will attract a professional pickleball tournament to New Orleans, and a DUPR Waterfall Tournament.

Pickleball Face-Off: Drew Brees vs. John McEnroe

On a memorable Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, tennis great John McEnroe emerged victorious against Drew Brees, the renowned former quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. This wasn’t just any match; it was a special exhibition game during the NOLA Pickle Fest.

The Anticipation: A Celebrity Pickleball Duel

Anticipation was palpable at the Convention Center. Enthusiastic fans had been queuing for hours, eager to see Drew Brees, the ex-NFL star, and John McEnroe, the tennis legend, clash in a unique pickleball match. Sponsored by B1 Bank, this event wasn’t just about the thrill of the game; it was a gesture of community support. Proceeds went to the Brees Dream Foundation, dedicated to assisting cancer patients and their loved ones. McEnroe, with his characteristic wit, remarked, “Given it’s for Drew’s charity, I was informed I should let him win.” Yet, the scoreboard told a different story with McEnroe clinching a 15-7 win.

Highlights: Brees and McEnroe’s Spirited Performance

Age is just a number, and this was evident when Drew Brees, associated with the Los Angeles Mad Drops pro pickleball team, faced off against McEnroe, who is two decades his senior. The two split victories in doubles, showcasing their legendary competitive streaks. McEnroe, true to his style, entertained the audience with his iconic courtside antics, exclaiming, “Remember, it’s all for a good cause!” This exhibition match was undoubtedly one of the standout events of the inaugural four-day pickleball fest, all in support of the Brees Dream Foundation.

NOLA Pickle Fest: More than Just a Game

While the celebrity match was a highlight, the NOLA Pickle Fest was a grand affair with 26 different brackets catering to enthusiasts of all age groups. The spirit of the fest was all about fun, camaraderie, and the love of pickleball.
